Surrounded – Justin Robert Price A1 giclée art prints
This will be the first for sale A1 giclée I've produced of my personal art.
It was a real moment to finally see it at the scale I'd always intended, other than a small jpeg on a website trying to show the concept to someone who might see the value in it. It cost me, but I backed myself! And I haven't done that quite as much as I should have at times.
You will probably hear me banging on about self-initiated projects for the creative. As a creative director and designer of 30 years, I often didn't allow myself the time to create like this for me. It felt like it didn't somehow matter to anyone. Bear with me...
One reason I stopped was due to a rather poor interview at an art college where a tutor implied 'maybe this wasn't for me?' Things were different then (early 90's) I'm still unsure what was meant by this comment. Was it the course itself, skills level, or maybe not being from the right side of town? But I distinctly remember the lack of interest in me, or my work. Hearing as a 15 year old, it had some rather negative impact. So this feels like a genuine f•ck you moment!
Second reason was when I started to work in agencies and design companies I wanted it bad and had to jump into the commercial mindset. Having to work on commercial briefs that had an end win or loss (that paid the bills) was a priority, for me and the owners. Again, things were a little different then as you tried to carve your way from art worker to designer to creative etc often having to fit in to their machine. To focus and to fit I mentally seemed to undervalue the process of doing these projects for me. Maybe that was the only choice I had at the time. Plus I've always been considerate and after working very long hours I didn't want to break into shared time with others escaping to do my own thing.
Above any of this, my take away from this is – play. It will make you better. Put that content into the world that means something to you and may be a groundbreaker for others. Be it: poetry, writing, photography, drawing, design... the list is endless. Just be yourself and put that into the work 🙌 You are unique. Your feelings and your personality matter. And that work... I look forward to seeing it!
